Shonali Mahajan’s one-stop-shop for the interiors space was born out of the need to explore the world of design through her own lens
What goes into designing a luxury space?
SM: Perfect client servicing, being organized and quick to respond, great communication skills. It requires being very detail-oriented, first figuring out all the back end services, and then the front end design, working with new materials, new processes and techniques, and getting the best to help deliver your dream. Finally it’s about getting into every single detail yourself. That’s why it’s called luxury.
How has your cultural background impacted your design philosophy?
SM: Living in Mumbai, we need spaces that have a lot of light, space, and ventilation, using easy-to-breathe, cotton, natural material. These are elements that I use very often in my spaces. I’ve always been exposed to art, architecture, and theater, so very often I incorporate antiques, art, heritage and drama into my spaces. I dream of severe, modern walls and spaces highlighted by antique panels, masks and brought to life with a pin spot of light.
What does it take to design a balanced space?
SM: I believe there are three very important factors – repetitions, restriction, and attention to detail. It’s very easy to over-design a space. It’s very difficult to remain restrained, disciplined and to know when not to cross the line. When we design a space, our approach is controlled. We like to maintain a balance and control on colours, textures and form on the architectural line and main furniture pieces, and bring in the dynamism and vibrancy through the softer elements like decor and soft furnishings.
