Creating the right mood

Fashion stylist Gaurav Bhatia is keen on breaking stereotypes in the industry through his work

What drew you to a career in fashion?

GB: I’ve always been fascinated by fashion but I never believed in myself or that I could fit into the ‘glam’ industry. I got rejected for the fashion shows in my college by the in-house team, so I decided to make my own team and create the whole show by myself. I had no clue about choreography, styling and other important aspects. When I started working on it, the whole journey became so exciting for me that I didn’t even think about food or water! That’s when I got a hint from the universe that fashion was my calling. I decided to do my Master’s from NIFT, and after that, I curated my own path. I trained in the PR and marketing fields for a short while before becoming a fashion stylist and creative consultant.

What makes your work distinctive?

GB: I try to keep my personal aesthetic constant in all the shoots. I try to be younger and bolder with my styling. Fashion is like a language to communicate so many stories, and I take this as an opportunity to break the stereotypes in our industry.

Share your aspirations.

GB: My personal objective is to diversify my role and expand my reach globally. I want to travel the world and explore different cultures, art and traditions that I can incorporate in my work. I’m also planning to target different segments of business like advertising, films and celebrity styling
