Dangerously delicate

ISSUE: 143

Kavya Potluri’s attention to minute detail is what sets her intricate and unconventional jewelry apart

What is your design philosophy?

KP: I don’t look for inspiration; it comes to me. I don’t have a standardized process to create. The one thing I’m very particular about in my work is the detailing because I love details. You don’t often see people creating minute details with such materials. I create the most dangerously delicate pieces using
brass and copper – they are all handcrafted. When I finish designing something, I keep visualizing that design till I make the final product. I depend a lot on my vision. I create the best stuff when I’m given the freedom to do it my way, which is the reason I never worked under anyone for long.

Which is your favorite creation so far?

KP: I love all my creations, and my favorites keep changing, but if I have to pick one now, it has to be ‘The Adirah’ headpiece because it’s so delicate and also very bold at the same time. It’s the perfect blend of two very opposite characteristics. That’s also the personality of my brand.

What challenges did you encounter while setting up your brand?

KP: The challenges you face as a creator and entrepreneur are poles apart. As a creator, I know how to handle anything that comes my way. As an entrepreneur, I am learning every single day. In the initial days, things like managing my team were very new to me and gaining respect from them took forever
because I’m the youngest. Working with artisans was the biggest challenge – they never took me seriously. They come with so much skill, but they have tunnel vision.
