Ayush Kalra uses his distinctive illustrations to highlight, and try to break, long-prevailing gender stereotypes
How did your tryst with illustration begin?
AK: I’ve been working as an illustrator for more than two years. I still see myself at the start of my journey but have seen a fair amount of success. Art is one of those skills where talent is more important than credentials. I took science in high school and then studied Communication Design at Pearl Academy. I think both played quite an important part in shaping my career as an illustrator.
How does it feel to be an Adobe Insider?
AK: This is huge for me and my work! Personally, I have used Adobe software for my entire digital art career, so when Adobe wanted me to be one of the Adobe Insiders from around the world, I was so excited and happy. It was a paid collaboration where I, as an artist, learned a lot and made sponsored ads for Adobe India via my Instagram. I was also paired with a few other Adobe Insiders at a global level and given a brief to work on for Adobe. The experience was magical and I learned so many new tricks and software skills.
How do you remain consistent and fresh in such a competitive industry?
AK: The best way to be creative is to stay surrounded by creative and artistic people. It’s better to hear the voice that comes from within you when you see other people’s artwork. Being optimistic also boosts creativity.
