A modern car cockpit spreads across the dashboard to create an immersive experience that revolves around convenience and safety. It reduces cognitive load and enables informed decision making. The One Cockpit project has played a big role in shifting the industry’s perception of UNO MINDA from a Tier-1 supplier to a technology company and a thought leader in the Indian automotive scenario. It has also opened the gates to winning UI/UX projects from Japanese automotive manufacturers.
Building Trust in Autonomous Driving
The evolution of autonomous driving technologies, presents unique challenges in the Indian driving scenario. Building trust between the driver and the vehicle is paramount, to ensure a seamless driving experience. One major challenge is the poor network connectivity in remote areas, which can hinder real-time data exchange and decision-making. Additionally, drivers often face information overload, making it difficult to process essential information quickly.
Enhanced Connectivity and Safety
To address these challenges, a strategic approach has been implemented in the design of the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems. Information is carefully segregated into primary, secondary, and tertiary data, which is then displayed across different screens: the Instrument Cluster, Infotainment System, and Passenger Display. This data can be transferred between displays contextually, allowing drivers to access relevant information seamlessly.
Key features of the system include connectivity-based route suggestions, offering alternate routes based on network connectivity to ensure uninterrupted navigation. The inter-screen swipe and drop feature facilitates smooth data exchange between displays, enhancing user interaction. A “Do Not Disturb” mode simplifies the interface by displaying only essential information, reducing cognitive load on the driver.
Vehicle type detection aids in identifying different vehicles during night-time driving, improving safety in low-visibility conditions. The safe exit feature displays indicators for safe vehicle exits by detecting the speed of approaching vehicles, ensuring driver and passenger safety. Terrain mapping capabilities detect and notify drivers of potholes, speed breakers, footpaths, and dividers, enabling safer and more informed driving decisions.
Creating a Seamless Driving Experience
The introduction of this advanced HMI system creates a hassle-free driving experience, significantly reducing the stress and cognitive load associated with current driving conditions. The advancements in HMI technology are revolutionising the driving experience in India, paving the way for safer, more connected, and more efficient autonomous driving systems.
