Though lacking in formal art training, SAMji has been able to craft an interesting career as an illustrator
How do you deal with a creative block?
SAMji : Creative blocks happen to everyone and you need to rest your mind when it needs it. You can’t get rid of creative blocks only through physical rest. However, this method can only be possible for personal projects; if deadlines are looming over your head, it’s practically impossible to take a break. In such situations I focus more on the rewards and remuneration I will receive after the completion of the project. That motivates me to work more efficiently and finish the job. It pushes me when I have deadlines and can’t really take a break.
How does social media influence the way you work and communicate with your audience?
SAMji : Social media has a really huge role in my work. Everybody wishes for their artworks to reach the right audience. In the past the only way to do it was through exhibitions. Conducting an exhibition is an expensive affair – with social media all this is done with zero cost. Not only does it help to reach the right audience, it also helps to create a network and circle according to one’s niche, and get contacts. Social media is a blessing if used properly.
How did you discover a calling to work in the creative industry?
SAMji : The realization that I could earn my livelihood by doing what I love and know how to do made me venture into this industry. Though it feels pretty good to say that, it’s a very romantic idea, to be honest. It was my survival instinct that guided me more than my passion. In the beginning I tried to survive with only the skills I had, but it didn’t work out. I began my venture into the creative field through animation. It was not a particularly successful stint. I went on to try freelance graphic designing but it really wasn’t my cup of tea either. Those were testing times. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to be able to switch to illustrating after a while, and it clicked. Looking back I realize that the word ‘discover’ surprisingly fits very well with my journey!
