Making Waves

ISSUE: 142

Despite never having actually seen a real yacht or been on one, Bhushan Powar has made a name for himself in the still nascent world of yacht design in India

What inspires you?

BP: Nature has always been and continues to be our guiding principle for designs. We could be inspired by the shapes of novel phenomena, elegant creatures, or exquisite landscape formations.

Where do you see the luxury yacht industry in India heading?

BP: There is great potential for India to be the next hub for yacht builders and designers. The country is seeing talented designers emerging, with some leaning specifically towards yacht design. Indian boat builders must start thinking out of the box to create something new that can offer tough competition to European markets in the coming years.

What challenges did your choice to pursue yacht design bring?

BP: The yacht design industry has been dominated by the Europeans and that has been one of our biggest challenges as we are the first and only luxury yacht design studio based in India. Developing unique designs and collaborating with yacht influencers helped us bring our work into the spotlight. Having no one to guide us in this field, we leaned on social media as much as we could to gain all the knowledge needed to build our company portfolio. Ironically, I have never seen a yacht physically nor got an opportunity to be on one! However, we believe patience, perseverance, a blind will to excel, and hard work is the key to overcoming all the challenges that come our way.
