Shivangi Shah’s bespoke light installations reflect a unique blend of Indian and Western cultures
How has formal design education in product design impacted your career?
SS: While I was pursuing my MA in Product Design at University of the Arts, London, I used to visit and work at various art galleries and museums, where I was inspired by the large scale art installations. A chance encounter with a glass blowing artist made me curious about the age old craft of glass blowing. I was so inspired by blown glass, I decided I wanted to create lighting fixtures.
What is its design philosophy?
SS: Hive Home signifies nature and beauty, and uniquely entwines elements of art in creative design. Each design has been developed to create sculptural focal points for a specific area within large, medium and small interior spaces, defining the different attributes of nature with its simplicity.
What attracts you about glass as a medium?
SS: Glass is versatile and full of life. It offers endless possibilities of shapes, colors, optical effects or combinations with other materials. It is pure and fiery, delicate and flamboyant, organic as well as geometric. All one needs is to give it a proper direction.
