Describe your style. What inspires you?

CJ: My style is raw, organic and earthy. My photography style has always been about keeping it natural with a play of light. I don’t like to get extremely conceptual with my photographs – focusing on the storytelling instead. Nature is always my biggest inspiration, the small drops of beauty around us that we take for granted, and brief glimpses of stories around me. The most challenging and simultaneously rewarding portion of this job is to keep the creativity alive in every frame and every story. The trick, I’ve found, is to let it take shape organically, and add the right dashes of poetry to then make it come alive.

How do you create a balance between personal work and professional projects?

CJ: I don’t think I create enough of a balance to share my views of this. It’s merely about being selective of the professional projects you take up so you have enough time for your personal projects. It’s hard to do so when faced with a lot of professional projects that resonate with my personal views and style. I think you just have to focus on making your voice heard, professional or personal.

How has social media impacted the connection with your audience during the pandemic?

CJ: Social media has played a large role in my work. Instagram has helped build a community of individuals that resonate with my voice and help me amplify it. It has been my main source of commercial projects and also a platform to showcase my personal projects. During the pandemic, social media helped me build a community that encouraged and created an environment that helped build my creative identity. It strengthened my creative flair in a time when there were not many positive thoughts around and helped me connect with individuals from all around the world.
