An artist evolves

ISSUE: 136

Multidisciplinary artist and designer, Deepraj Dutta uses his creative talents to give shape to his imagination

An Enlightened Mind

What first drew you to the visual arts?

DD: Instinct! As a child, I naturally resorted to my drawing book and pencil to express my joy, fear, emotions, and experiences. My dad is one of the most creative people I know and learning from him helped unleash the artist in me. Though I chose this journey early in life, there was a phase when I got uncertain about my plans due to social expectations of a secure working life, but eventually I couldn’t ignore my calling. To put it in the words of Paulo Coelho, “When you want something, the universe conspires to help you achieve it.”

Responsibilities

Describe your style. How have you evolved as an artist?

DD: I have emulated the styles and process of every artist that I have ever admired, but over the years, I’ve also evolved as an artist. My world view has broadened and changed, and this reflects in my current body of work. From abstractionism to realism, I have tried everything but in these years of experimenting, I am at a place where I feel safe as an artist, undistracted by the work of other artists.

Acrylic studies

What are you currently working on?

DD: I am working on a couple of cool things but I’m most excited about a product that is coming out next year. I have put my heart and soul into building this from scratch and I can’t wait for the world to see it. I am also working on self-commissioned animation project about life that I am sure a lot of people will relate with.
