Soul searching through the lens

ISSUE: 136

Photographer and filmmaker Avani Rai believes that her work at any moment is just a sum of all her previous experiences

What defines great photography for you?

AR: There are infinite ways of looking at a moment in time. Photography is about capturing that moment in a way that it can be remembered forever. And that moment is any moment that we experience in the world.

What, according to you, is the most crucial part of shooting portraits?

AR: Portraits are a way of searching for a soul from the viewfinder of a camera. And when you get to experience that in 1000th of a second you’ve got it and you know you’ve got it. It’s in the eyes of your subject; it’s in the expression and the body language. It is unspoken. We are human beings who know how to communicate and that’s our biggest advantage. But photography and portraiture are irrespective of what you know, understand and take away from a person.

What would you advise youngsters keen on pursuing photojournalism as a career?

AR: Carry your camera all the time, photograph as much as you can, look at people’s work and look at it with the perspective of learning what matters and what appeals to you. Also, look at the work to know that this is not what you are going to do.
