Tribal touches

ISSUE: 130

A bohemian at heart, Bhavya Ramesh creates free-spirited jewelry that is much more than mere ornamentation

Tell us about the Bhavya Ramesh jewelry brand.

BR: We are a bohemian collective born in May 2018, focusing on conscious silverware. Our designs are carefully thought of and created to embrace gypsy souls and free spirits. I use bold structures and geometric shapes that add more character to the wearer. My designs are influenced by tribal gypsy, and rock and roll cultures. We did not launch as an independent physical store; however, we have an independent store online and stock at different online platforms and physical stores.

How do you plan to expand your brand?

BR: I want it to be known nationally and internationally as an independent jewelry label that aims at making design an experience by celebrating unity, positivity, diversity, history, poetry, fierceness, beauty and consciousness. We want to be uncompromisingly innovative and support local artisans practicing traditional art forms. If there’s one piece of jewelry that you’d pass on from one generation to another, let it be BR.

How has COVID-19 impacted jewelry design in India?

BR: The ongoing pandemic has only allowed us to reflect on our design process and given us the time to work on pending projects. As a self-taught jewelry designer, I believe in learning everything on the road – earlier this was possible through pop-ups, where first-hand interactions with customers usually helped me decide how comfortable they were wearing a piece of jewelry. But since pop-ups and exhibitions are on hold right now, this sort of input has been limited. However, I do see everyone shifting to digital platforms and I’m really glad that we had our website functional even before COVID-19 struck.
